Let’s talk about this first image of Henry Cavill as Superman. You can click the picture for a bigger photo.
My first reaction was, “Damn, can he fill that suit out nicely!”
But then I really looked at the picture. The most minor grievance I have with it is that his hair looks weird. Maybe it’s the lighting, but it looks not how I want it to look. Also minor, the look on his face. It almost looks slightly maniacal. Almost.
Now the big one. I don’t think I’m really into Zack Snyder directing this movie anymore. All of his movies so far look like they’re just filmed in front of a green screen, which is because they have been. That style worked for 300 because it was based on a graphic novel and it really gave them the ability to make the movie look like it was a graphic novel. It worked for Sucker Punch because it took place in a dream world that Baby Doll created in her head, and the green screen allowed them to create a dream like world. But for Man of Steel? I don’t think the green screen look is going to work. We live in a post-2005 Batman Begins world where a lot of comic book movies have taken their cues from its success as being gritty and realistic, and that’s almost what we expect from our superhero movies nowadays. I mean, even the Spider-Man franchise decided to reboot itself and change from the campy, serious at times, but light at heart Sam Raimi trilogy where everything just seemed brighter (especially in color schemes) to the darker looking, more gritty, Marc Webb directed The Amazing Spider-Man. The picture from Man of Steel isn’t enough to judge whether or not Snyder is going to go for that realistic look for his movie, but based on his other movies, I don’t think his massive use of green screen is going to get him there. Maybe he’ll change it up for this movie. Who knows though. He is keeping his streak of muted colors though, which gives it that gritty feel.
Even with my negativity, I am excited about this movie. And as much grief as I’m giving Zack Snyder, I can’t help but applaud him for some of the casting he did for the movie. Michael Shannon as General Zod, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White? It’s kind of inspired. I am excited about Amy Adams as Lois Lane just because I like her so much, but I want to know if they’re going to try and make us believe that her and Henry Cavill are the same age. Because she’s almost 10 years older than him. Not that she looks super old or anything. I just want to see a picture of them together to see what they look like or if they’ll have any chemistry. And I might finally be over my whole “why are they casting British actors as Superman and Spider-Man” spiel. They really are great actors. I can’t wait to see what Henry Cavill does with the role.
And just a fun bit of information, Henry Cavill was who Stephanie Meyer pictured in her head when she thought of Edward Cullen in the Twilight books. I’m trying to picture him in the photo above with sparkly skin right now, and it makes me laugh. Good thing he looked too old to play Edward when they were casting!
